LeapPad Explorer v Vtech InnoTab: Which Should You Buy?

So what do the manufacturers say?

LeapPad Explorer

Vtech Camera

From the award winning educational toy company comes LeapPad, the learning tablet just for kids. With a built-in camera, and a library of 100+ games and activities, the durable LeapPad features innovative apps that inspire creativity and turn reading into fun and games. It's a new way to learn, a new way to play - a new way to unlock your child's potential!

Vtech InnoTab

InnoTab is a multi-media learning handheld combining educational games, creative activities and e-books on a multi-functional touch-screen tablet. Children can invent core skills in reading, spelling, maths, logic and creativity with the many included activities such as an e-reader, art studio, interactive globe, video player and photo viewer. Plus parents can download further games and learning apps from their computer.

What features do they have in common?

Well first things first the price, both have a Rrp of 79.99. Whilst there may be some offers to be had these may be harder to come by as we get closer to Christmas.

They are both aimed at the same age market: 4-9 years.

Both come in two colours. The LeapPad is ready in green or a purpley pink, the InnoTab in blue or pink.

Whilst the LeapPad is smaller in size they both have the same 5 inch screen size.

Both use touch screen technology. The InnoTab relies on the touch/motion technology for gameplay, app use etcetera, while the LeapPad also has a direction pad.

You can track children's advance for both tablets online.

Both use 4aa batteries. Although neither retailer promote the use of rechargeable batteries both tablets work fine with them, and this is likely to be a less costly option as both can eat up battery power quickly. You could use an Ac adaptor with both, although neither currently has a recharging pack available.

Both allow you to purchase the same app for separate consoles (great if you have complicated tablets in the house). Although LeapFrog limit their use to two consoles.

What are their differences?

The LeapPad has a built-in camera, the InnoTab does not. Whilst you can connect it to your Vtech Kidizoom cameras if you do not already have these it is extra cost and an additional one item lying colse to the house. The lack of a built in camera is a real let down for the InnoTab.

However to make up for the lack of camera the InnoTab has two major features which the LeapPad lacks. The InnoTab can play Mp3s and downloaded movies (transferred to your computer to the InnoTab from traditional Dvds). Both features require the use of an Sd card which again is an further purchase, but these are reasonably cheap now. The InnoTab would therefore be great for in the car, no extra Dvd player needed. The LeapPad will only play the downloaded app 'movies' which are cartoon based educational titles.

The LeapPad is more unmistakably customisable according to your childs' age. This is a great feature for multi sibling households, or just to adjust to your childs' level.

Whilst this will be covered in more depth in the next paragraph it's worth noting that the LeapPad currently has a much wider app and software range. You can use the same cartridges and apps as the Leapster Explorer used so there is already an existing library which is continually being built on. The software differs in price. LeapPad games are cheaper with a Rrp of 19.99 and lots of bargains to be had, the InnoTab software has a Rrp of 24.99, and as all titles are new there aren't quite as many bargains ready yet.

The built in apps differ. InnoTab has an address book, calendar, notebook, calculator, apps lacking on the LeapPad. Both have drawing programmes (although the LeapPad doesn't have an already built in colouring app, you would need to buy the Mr Pencil game for this).

What software is available?

The LeapPad has a large software library ready consisting of game cartridges and apps (e-books, videos, performance apps, flash cards, games and more).

The InnoTab library is small but growing.

By and large the software ready is very similar. Both tablets have character software ready for purchase based on kids' favourites such as Disney Princesses, Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants, Penguins of Madagascar, Cars and Scooby Doo.

The LeapPad titles tend to be game based whereas the InnoTab titles are an e-book with smaller related games and activities.

So which tablet is for your child?

Largely the decision boils down to which you'd rather have: camera and video-recorder built in (LeapPad) or plays movies and music (InnoTab). Plus it is worth holding in mind that the Vtech software is more high-priced at 5 more. (although the apps are similar prices for both generally varying between 3.50 and 7).

The items you currently own may also affect your purchasing decision, if you already have a Vtech Kidizoom the lack of camera with the InnoTab may not seem such an issue. If you already own a Leapster Explorer you will be able to use the same games and replacement the apps to the LeapPad.

Another issue to bear in mind if these are to be Christmas gifts is availability. Both manufacturers underestimated the tablets' popularity and many retailers are experiencing shortages for both.

Know Which Tablet Pc Is better for Kids: Vtech InnoTab Vs LeapPad Explorer

The most coarse gift for the holiday season would by all means; of course be tablet computers for kids. The question is: which is the most ideal tablet to get? Let's take a look at the Vtech InnoTab Vs. LeapPad Explorer competition to see which one is best for you.

Price And Cartridges

Vtech Camera

The LeapPad Explorer is priced at 0 while the Vtech InnoTab is cheaper that this at only . Since most of their features are the same, the price would by all means; of course be an extreme consideration among customers.

This being the case, you have looked at your long term costs. Do you wish to buy more game cartridges in the future? If yes, the LeapPad is your best choice because it is compatible with cartridges while the Vtech InnoTab is not compatible with it. Some cartridges may be compatible with the latter but those from the V reader are not compatible with it.

Design

When comparing Vtech InnoTab vs. LeapPad Explorer by design, you will consideration that both children's tablets have alike designs. Both come with a 5-inch color display and both make use of a stylus or a touch function. Also, both types have tilt sensors that may come in handy when playing some games. Last but not the least, both are also very colorful and are easy to use and manipulate by children.

camera

LeapFrog LeapPad has a built in camera while the Vtech InnoTab does not have one. With the LeapPad, children can even originate their own movies and take photos.

Memory

The Vtech InnoTab has a built in 64Mb memory size so if you wish to store more data to it, you need to buy a isolate Sd card. On the other hand, LeapFrog LeapPad has a built in 2Gb memory that will more or less be enough for your child's use.

Features

Another coarse feature with both tablets is that they both have video player, picture viewer, and eReader. Unfortunately, the LeapPad does not have an Mp3 player unlike the InnoTab.

What to Buy?

It is hard to say which one of the two you should get for your child. Although the Vtech InnoTab is cheaper compared to LeapFrog LeapPad, the latter has more features compared to the first option. What you can simply consider is the kind of manufacturer each of the brands has as well as the kind of features your child wants to have.

This will be two of your choosing factors when selecting between Vtech InnoTab vs. LeapPad Explorer. The lowest line is, your choice should be ready right in time for the holidays to make sure that your child will get the gift that he or she wants to get.

Hot Christmas Toys For 2011: 12 Most Wanted Toys

From the latest eye we conducted we have gathered a list of the top 12 hot Christmas toys that are recognized by many buyers to be the best gifts for Christmas to kids of all ages. My team of toy lovers recently conducted a eye on what toys most kids want to receive for Christmas. Not only the kids but also the want-to-be kids participated in the latest eye we conducted. At first we asked them what are the 10 toys they would like to include in their wish list for Christmas and they gave us the most promising results so far.

We could have just given a list of the top 10 Christmas toys, but the two other toys seem promising that we couldn't just help but include them in the list. I hope that find this record very helpful in your research.

Vtech Camera

Below are the twelve of the hot Christmas toys of 2011. They are not arranged in any single order to avoid being biased opinions in our side:

1. Lego City 3182 - It comes with a Lego Airport with passenger plane that assuredly looks like a real plane but it can be detached to form anything imaginable!

2. Fireman Sam kit - this one is popular with pre-schools.

3. GoGo My Walking Pup - It barks and moves like a real puppy and its battery driven.

4. Toy story Iii comes with Jet pack buzz light-year.

5. V-tech camera- This fancy camera can assuredly film videos.

6. Monopoly Revolution- one of the noticeable changes in this game is the electronic sound effects that can be manually switch on or off.

7. Moon Dough- It's a kiddy toy can originate farm animals.

8. Nerf N assault Stampede Ecs- this one comes with sixty dissimilar projectiles with it.

9. Paper Jams Guitar- basically this toy is made out of paper that enables kids to write or record their songs that is featured with real chords.

10. Pump loons- This one is a fun to play with race game. The goal of the game is to inflate dissimilar characters with dissimilar colors.

What makes this top 12 Christmas toys the best eye we have so far is the fact that we assuredly ask the parent of the kids to participate in the eye as well. About 100 kids participated in this eye and I can say that we did have a flourishing campaign.

Iluv 9200 Ipod Speaker theory

When you want to combine your old beloved Cds with the latest iPod technology, a expedient like the iLuv 9200 iPod speaker system comes in very handy. Iluv call their product a "vertical audio system", as it features 4 Cd bays on each side of the console. The Cd bys have sliding doors created from transparent plastic, which ads well to the white surface of the iLuv 9200. The iPod docking center and the Fm/Am radio bring the final touches to this engaging home entertainment option.

Although there is no subwoofer attached to the iLuv 9200 iPod speaker system, you do get the selection of adding one via a dedicated output. The speakers can be wither located on movable stands or mounted on the walls. The speaker cord is long enough so you don't have to worry about running out of it in larger rooms. The upper part of the iLuv 9200 iPod speaker system also houses the iPod dock. The dock is not descriptive when not in use and it also serves as a charger for your iPod.

Vtech Camera

The system works well if you're not after the best capability out there. The price is also on the funds side. The plastics and materials used to generate it are ok, but the remote control is a bit too large. Some noise is heard when the Cd doors are opening up, but other than that the iLuv 9200 iPod speaker system offers above mean quality. The sound capability coming from the iLuv 9200 iPod speaker system is, however, very good. There is unnoticeable sound resonance and the expedient is prompt to riposte remote control commands.

While the iLuv 9200 iPod speaker system is not packed with the latest in iPod technology and it has a few flaws that will probably annoy users every now and then, it is a expedient that delivers, for the kind of price it sells for (£160 in the United Kingdom). Direct competitors of the iLuv 9200 iPod speaker system should also be looked at when shopping for this sort of home entertainment electronic device.

enumerate of the latest Olympus Waterproof Digital Camera Models

Why consider the Olympus Waterproof Digital camera Models?

Having a rugged camera enables you to take it everywhere and have the capability to take pictures in the most testing of conditions. Olympus has been in the rugged camera store for a long time now and the models keep on improving. The current Olympus waterproof digital camera stable is the even great than the last, with improved lens, mega pixels and design. Not only are these waterproof and shock proof, all models are ice proof as well. The Olympus Tough Stylus 8010 has a additional added feature of being crush proof so there's no need to worry if anything falls on top of it. These cameras have neat features along with "Tap Control" when execution of the camera is via taps to the body. This is especially useful when surface in the snow when wearing gloves, or when swimming underwater.

Vtech Camera

Which are the Current Models? The most recent rugged camera models available are the Olympus Tough Stylus 8010, 6020 and 3000. All are intuitive to use for adult and children alike, come in bright colors, with the Olympus Tough Stylus 8010 as the toughest flagship model (given its crush proof feature).

Are these Cameras Big and Heavy? No they are not; these are similar in size and weight to other ageement cameras. In fact, these rugged camera models are ultra compact, lightweight, stylish, easy to use and full of features.

A Kid tough camera Too! An overlooked advantage of Olympus waterproof digital camera range is that it can also double up as a kid tough camera. Their rugged nature, along with Olympus Tough Stylus 8010's crush proof feature, makes these exquisite to cope with spills, knocks and drops. The Olympus waterproof digital camera models' ice proof construct is ideal for winter sports or just when out building a snowman. These cameras also come in bright colors such as pink, blue and green which is sure to be a hit with kids (and adults) alike.

It is not essential to carry both an "adult" and a toy kid tough camera, when any of the Olympus waterproof digital camera range can do the job of both. While the cost of these kid tough camera models may be more individually than when compared to the Fisher Price and Vtech toy cameras, the cost of owning both would almost undoubtedly be more. Besides, the capability of the photos taken with the previous are far excellent than the toy versions.

60-Inch Plasma Tv - Lg 60Pk950 - quote

Introduction

Just before a major sporting event is a great time to buy a new large screen high-definition plasma Tv. The Lg 60Pk950 60" Tv arrived at my door for the 2010 World Cup. I needed to replace a Phillips 60" Tv which arrived for the 2006 World Cup. The Lg is my second Hdtv but first plasma Hdtv. I had not seen it in the store; I'd just seen the advertising and read some reviews. The best price I found was at the Sears online store. I am writing this review as an owner who has used it every day for a few months. It's a fairly long review because it's a fairly high-priced Tv. Buyers may benefit from reading as much as possible to make an informed decision.

Vtech Camera

First Impression

My first view after turning on the Tv: "Wow, citizen look so lifelike - like they are in my living room!"

Size

It's called a 60" television, but that refers to the diagonal length. The actual size is about 55" x 34." The "frame" or trim all around the Tv is black. It is not equally wide all the way round; it's about 1.5" on the sides and top but about 3" at the bottom.

Depth

It is highly thin at only about 3" deep. That's pretty impressive for a Tv this large. It was a huge correction from my 60" Phillips which is about 2' deep! It is therefore excellent for mounting on a wall, but the wall mount kit does not come with the Tv. There is a set of sockets on the side as well as the back so you can neatly mount it and discretely hide wires.

Weight

Although the Lg 60" is very thin, it is very heavy. It categorically needs two citizen to move it. Two delivery men set it up for me quickly when it arrived. The large plasma screen is wholly protected by a sheet of glass about 1/8" thick. I first put the Tv on a table but after only a few days there was a permanent dip in the middle because it's so heavy.

Viewing Angles

Instead of permanently mounting it on a wall, I decided to use the stand that came with it. I wanted the choice to adjust the angle to view the Tv squarely from two separate positions in my living room: straight in front (from an armchair) and off to one side (from a couch). The range of movement for the stand is minute to about 30 degrees but that was good adequate for me. As you would expect with a plasma, the Lg looks good from any angle. This makes it ideal for a large viewing audience in a bar or at home. It was a big upgrade from my Phillips when finding at it from the side, because the brightness and divergence remain the same instead of dropping much lower.

Glare

Lg thinks its Protective Skin Glass (Tm) is a big deal judging by how big those words are on the cardboard box in which it is packed. The surface is very shiny like glass so there's a lot of glare and reflection if you watch the Tv while the day. The payoff presumably is you don't have to worry about damaging the plasma because it is always behind thick glass like a rare artifact in a museum. But you could buy good curtains to sell out the glare.

Contrast

Lg makes a few separate 60" Tvs with the divergence being contrast. I got this one because it offers more contrast. It costs more but not a lot more. I considered the divergence ratio of 3,000,000:1 but decided to get the 5,000,000:1. However, now I'm not sure if I've categorically seen the benefit of the extra contrast. It may only be noticeable for sure movies or programs.

Color

The saturation of the color is beautiful. I immediately noticed the richness of the reds beyond anything I'd ever previously seen on a television. I didn't observation any color problems nor any tonal defects. Nothing was too dark, too light, or lacking adequate contrast.

Custom Color

You can turn the color temperature quite categorically from the photograph wizard. You move the sliders from 0 to 100. But there aren't the whole of convention color controls for the level of precision you might expect for a high-end plasma Tv.

Picture

There is a huge divergence in screen quality between the separate photograph options (Game, Off, Cinema, etc.), so you should test them all out when you first get it. What looks general on one setting wholly blows out the highlights in an additional one setting. People's skin tone gets categorically bright, unnatural, and weird.

Zoom

There are any photograph ratios: 16:9, Just Scan, Set by Program, 4:3, Zoom and Cinema Zoom. The photograph quality with Zoom of policy is worse but it looked okay for Hdtv programming; any way it is not very good for non-Hdtv shows. Zoom can look great than stretching because at least the proportions of the photograph are more natural, even though all gets cropped.

Unforgiving Quality

You may not observation citizen with bad skin until you get a plasma Tv like the Lg 60Pk950. It is highly unforgiving. Back when plasma was in its infancy, some famous women were reportedly upset with the new technology. Makeup artists had to pick up the slack, but they don't cover everything. The sheer screen size of 60" makes it difficult to miss acne scars, moles, bad shaving, etc. The screen gives them an unflattering sort of 3D look. Closeups can be shocking.

Freeze Frame

When you freeze a frame the good news is it doesn't quickly dim, black out, or start a screensaver like some plasma Tvs. This lets you enjoy the frame as a photograph for a while like it's a gorgeous painting in your living room. But after a few minutes, the Lg will automatically lower the contrast. It's not a huge drop to barely descriptive levels. Thus you need to be careful about pausing to avoid the plasma screen getting burn damage.

Sound

Overall the sound quality is okay, but I didn't find it to be impressive like the picture. The bass could be stronger; even at the maximum setting of 100, I wanted a deeper bass. Some buyers will undoubtedly want to use their own sound ideas with this Tv. Be sure to test separate sound settings from the Options menu when you first get it, especially Clear Voice, which eliminates a lot of background noise. I noticed the correction immediately and made it the permanent setting.

Mute

When you hit the Mute button on the remote, there's a quick oversized descriptive on the Tv to confirm it, which categorically isn't necessary. The Mute message lingers too long, but at least it doesn't keep the word "Mute" on the screen all the time like an old 60" Phillips! When it's on Mute and you hit the remote to lower the volume, it immediately cancels the mute, which isn't ideal when you'd set the volume high, and want to lower it without waking up the neighbors. Mute should be independent of the Volume Up/Down settings. Even when you have it on Mute and turn the photograph setting (e.g., from Cinema to Sport), for some weird reason it also cancels mute. That's a organize flaw.

Intelligent Sensor

I view there must be something wrong with my new Tv when I first got it, because the brightness kept changing every few minutes while I was watching soccer matches at the World Cup. I had started watching the games before reading the entire manual. But before I called Technical Support, I went online and discovered it was the "Intelligent Sensor." I hadn't realized inspiring Sensor was the default setting. This technology adjusts the brightness depending on the light level in the room or what it thinks is the ideal setting. I found this clever idea rather annoying and turned it off. It's a bit jarring and distracting. Lg needs to frame out how to make brightness levels transition moderately so you don't observation the shift.

Power Consumption

The Lg is wise and modern in the whole of options it provides users to sell out energy. Plasma Tvs can use a gigantic whole of energy, but the Lg offers any separate settings, including: Minimum, Medium, Maximum, and Off. You can quickly turn the power level from the remote using the green vigor button at the top left corner. The lower the setting, the less inspiring the picture. Depending on what you are used to seeing, you may be perfectly content with a lower level. It was similar to my old Tv's brightness and divergence levels. But even if you are used to more brightness and contrast, you might find you can get used to a lower setting after a while. One of the best features is it lets you wholly turn off the screen in three seconds, which I find is excellent when I want to listen to music broadcast over cable. It saves the screen and saves energy.

Heat

Although it's thin don't think for a minute it will stay cool. It radiates heat on general settings fairly quickly like a transported heater. I noticed the room temperature divergence in the summer. But you can categorically sell out the heat by lowering the power level as noted above.

Remote

The remote is too cheaply designed for a high-end plasma Tv. It's not the best companion. You would expect more from Lg--an high-priced Tv deserves a high-quality remote. The button positions are not very intuitive and the remote's edges are slightly sharp. It does have a backlighting button, but it shuts off automatically too quickly.

Slide Show

There are a few Usb ports for acceptable memory sticks. The ports on the side of the Tv are easiest to use. The photograph quality of the slide show is surprisingly gorgeous. A half-decent photo off a modern digital camera shows up on the plasma screen at the same quality level as Hd programs. The resolution is so high you can categorically read text on clear images. You can adjust the slide show speed to Slow, Medium, or Fast. You can also turn the setting to Full Screen. It lets you start the slide show from any image; just use the arrow keys to scan through the thumbnails and then hit Enter.

YouTube and Picasa

The 60Pk950 lets you watch YouTube videos and see Picasa pictures. Just hit the NetCast button on the remote.

Viewing Distance

First-time large screen Tv buyers should be aware that distance can make a big difference. There are charts online which tell you the best distance for the screen size. I've tested separate distances and observation that a program can be much more absorbing, not to mention great to see, when you're closer to the screen. This is not just because of the distance but also the clarity of the photograph and the degree to which it fills your field of vision. You should categorically think the issue of distance before you permanently mount the plasma on a wall. One chart says 94" (just less than 8') is the optimal distance for a 60" Tv with 1080i. I commonly watch from 12' away and don't feel the need to move closer.

Quirks and problems

Slide show

The photograph load speed is dependent on image size. Smaller file sizes load quickly and larger files slowly. That's fine if all files are about the same size, but not very good when they vary. Each slide should appear at the same speed no matter what file size. When you turn off the slide show and cycle pictures individually, it gives you too much facts (file name, date, dimensions, and size). Users don't want that unless they're on a computer. The file supervision info disappears automatically after a few seconds, but it shouldn't appear in the first place. The default slide show speed setting is Fast; it should be Medium. After you watch a slide show, and turn the Tv off, but then return to the slide show, you see it has saved your place so you can start up right where you left off, but it reset your slide show speed. The pause button on the remote doesn't pause slide shows.

Music format

The Lg lets you play music from your Usb drive just like it lets you view pictures, so I tried to play some of my m4a files that were in my iTunes folder. But it wouldn't accept them. It may only accept mp3 files.

Static line

The top or lowest of the Tv occasionally shows a line of "static." It is similar to what you sometimes see on old Vcr video recordings. I didn't see this on my previous Hdtv, so I assume it's only on the Lg. It's annoying but fortunately it's rare; I've only seen it about once a week. Sometimes it's just a particular commercial; but at other times it's an entire program. When I want to see the program, I'll zoom in to cut off the top edge. It seems Lg didn't crop the top properly, or the video editors of some shows or commercials didn't do complete cropping, and the Plasma isn't forgiving. Either way, it shouldn't be there.

Odd delays

The startup is a minute odd. After you click the remote to turn the power on, you hear a quick click, but then there's a delay of about six seconds before you see anything on the screen. There's also a delay when you try to turn it off; the screen goes blank quickly, but the click comes about ten seconds later. Don't be tempted to click the power button again mental you didn't hit it hard adequate the first time.

Red light

When the Tv is off, a thin red light four inches wide appears at the lowest right of the screen. When you turn it on, that red light disappears, and a thin blue light appears under the town of the Tv. It goes off after a few seconds. I think both lights are unnecessary, as is the indulgent Lg logo that appears under the town of the Tv at the bottom.

Accidental hit

If you accidentally hit the Tv button (top right, just below the light button) while you're set up with a cable box, it blares static noise! Accessories First-time Hdtv buyers should be aware that besides the actual Tv there are associated stock and service upgrades which may be indispensable immediately, or they will soon adequate want to get them.

Hdtv Terminal

A quarterly old cable box that you've had for years that was artificial before Hdtv probably won't be capable of providing Hdtv programming. I had to upgrade to a new box. Call your cable provider to find out what you need and the prices. Some boxes you can rent; others you can buy.

Hdtv Channels

If you didn't already have Hdtv channels with your cable provider, you'll need to order them. They are an added monthly expense. Fortunately a lot more programs are now ready on Hdtv compared to just a few years ago. Viewing non-Hdtv programs on this large plasma is sometimes worse than viewing them on a small old Tv. The photograph looks blurred and it's difficult to watch. Some providers offer a set of Hd channels.

Blu-Ray Player

A quarterly Dvd player won't give the quality of Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray is Hd and the excellent partner for Hdtv. I have a Sony Blu-Ray player and it's phenomenal for watching the famous Bbc nature series.

Hdtv Video Recorder
A quarterly Dvd recorder or Vcr won't look very good on the 60Pk950 even if you article a show that was broadcast in Hd. One choice is a Pvr (Personal Video Recorder) or equivalent; it is a hard drive which records Hd programs in Hd so when you play them back you see them in crystal clear Hd.

Grounding

My Lg wasn't grounded. It's annoying when you get a brand new large high-definition plasma Tv, expecting a excellent optic experience, only to see faint purple bands rising all the time from the lowest to the top of the screen! And the bonus is a background hum. This isn't a defect by Lg. It's a common Tv grounding problem. There are separate ways to solve it. One is to get your cable provider to ground the Tv; an additional one way is to buy a cheap Dayton Vit-1 Isolation Transformer from Parts Express, which reduces the question by 80%. There's an additional one trick to deal with the last 20% of the A/V imperfections.

Box

Lg says you have to keep the huge cardboard box it comes in for the first month in case you need to return it, so make sure you have adequate warehouse space. The box is a lot bigger than the 60" Tv.

Conclusion

The Lg 60Pk950 60" Tv is a very impressive piece of technology. It had the Wow Factor when I first tried it, and I still love the Tv a few months later. The photograph is very sharp and the sound is okay. The remote isn't great and there are occasional annoying issues, but you categorically forget them when you are enjoying a rich optic experience. Sporting events look spectacular and nature programs are stunning. Cartoon graphics are very sharp. Movies are out of this world. Everyone in the family can wholly enjoy the Lg 60Pk950 60" Tv.

#1 Digital Camera fix problem - Broken Lcd Screen

Here we have some facts about what I believe to be the #1 camera repair issue: broken Lcd screens.

We live in a throw-away society, it's a easy fact. You buy that brand new fancy digital camera with all the bells and whistles for 0, and in 6 months to 1 year it's worth maybe half that, and then the unthinkable happens: you drop it and it breaks. The Lcd is cracked, or the lens is jammed; what do you do? You head back to the store with your poor dinky camera and the guy behind the counter (that knows nothing about cameras except for what's written on the box, and even less about camera repair) tells you it's not worth it to fix it and you should toss it in the trash. You feel ripped off and mad at the camera builder and you toss it out and buy a new one made by somebody else.

There are alternatives, there are all the time alternatives to every problem. Honest! Yes, it may cost 0 to fix your camera, and yes you can buy that camera in the bubble pack on the shelf at W**l M**t (they don't pay my bills... I don't advertise their name, sorry) for less than 0, but what kind of potential do you in fact expect from a 0 camera? Not very good potential I hope, because you're not going to get it.

#1 - Broken/cracked Lcd screen.

It was hard for me to choose between a jammed lens and a broken Lcd screen but I stuck with Lcd for #1 because it's so easy to break your Lcd that you don't even have to touch the camera to do it!

The Lcd (Liquid Crystal Display) is the view screen on the back of the camera that lets you see menus, playback pictures etc. The Lcd is very thin, very fragile, and on many many cameras wholly Unprotected! Look at the back of your camera, is the screen recessed slightly or is the back of the camera flat and smooth? If it's flat you have a protective 'window' or 'glass' over the Lcd to help preclude damage and breakage. If it's not flat, you have nothing protecting your Lcd and should put a good potential Lcd screen protector on the camera and Not those thin, flimsy 'saran wrap' plastic film screen protectors, they are worthless.

- Don't leave your camera in your car in summer or winter. Extreme heat can cause expansion of the liquid in the Lcd and cause it to 'crack', and on the other side of things Extreme cold can cause it to freeze!

- Don't put whatever up against the Lcd in your camera bag, it will bang against the Lcd and crack it (yes, even if it has a window over it, it will break!)

- Don't put your camera in your back pocket and then sit down!

- Don't put your camera in your front pocket and then roll over on it.

-... Just don't put your camera in your pants pocket please. =)

Ok, so it's broken, what do you do now?

- The builder will just site impact damage and will refuse the repair even if the camera wasn't dropped etc. You can try, and I wish you luck, but they probably won't fix it.

- Look for a defective camera on e**y (hey they don't pay me to advertise for them...) and make one good camera from the two if you are handy.

- Look for an actual camera repair business and not somebody that will send it to the builder and tell you it's 0 and 4-6 weeks to repair. (If they tell you this, they are Not repairing your camera for you, they are sending it to the manufacturer, guaranteed)

Many Lcd screens are very easy to setup and you can do it yourself and all you need is a small screwdriver. Other Lcd's are very difficult to install, and even professionals don't like to do them! I can't tell you Brand.... Is the best and Brand... Is the worst, it's in fact not like that. clear Series of cameras have 1 or 2 models that are difficult to work on, yet the rest of them are fairly level forward. You need to rule for yourself if you want to open your camera and try the repair yourself or not.

How is an Lcd replaced?

With most Canon digital camera Lcd screens for example (using them as the example because they have the largest market share) all you do is disconnect the ribbon cable for the Lcd and the backlight (the light that shines through the Lcd and allows you to see what is on the screen) and then setup the new Lcd. Some come with the backlight attached, some do not. Some backlights need to be soldered to the mainboard of the camera, some do not.

- Be meticulous to not touch the flash capacitor contacts! You Will zap yourself if you do, and it will Hurt a bit. You will probably throw your camera over the room when it happens. (Yeah, I've done it, I've been repairing cameras for 5 years now so....) We have 'flash capacitor dischargers' and use them every time we open a camera.

I hope this sheds some light on the subject. You do not have to throw your camera away because the Lcd is broken, and you can even fix it yourself!
